Thank you, LDLee. 59 Diner...that's it! They even have a soda jerk.

Interesting about Felix's on Montrose, as well as that about Last Concert Cafe.

I did a lot of research on La Carafe at Rice University Library at one time and found that was also a brothel once. Sam Houston himself was supposedly a client.

Glad to hear that Fitzgerald's is still going and getting better. I fondly remember seeing the likes of Ezra Charles, Miss Molly, Buckwheat Zydeco, Pierre and the Zydeco Dots, and many other good bands there.

Speaking of which, is Miss Molly still doing shows? She was always my and DH's fave local singer.

Poor jfikar will come back to see that we've all hijacked this thread. But, at least we've added more Houston attractions for future reference.

Yes, LDLee...I totally forgot about the Greek Festival, as well as the Westheimer Arts Festival. Thanks for reminding me.

Go to the Cheesecake Factory. If you are down in Galveston for some reason, go to the Mosquito Grille Cafe.

Hey, does anyone else remember Liberty Hall on Chenevert on edge of downtown? I saw the Boss there just when Asbury Park album came out, before he got big. And Taj Mahal. And BB King. And on and on. What a great place. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

La Carafe is the palce downtown, where Market Street area used to be, right? When I lived in Bellaire in my 20s, my roomate (and still my very best friend in the world) used to work two jobs, teaching during the day, then come home and change into a little black and white sort of french bistro outfit w/a short skirt, and she went downtown to wait tables at La Carafe at night. And on her nights off, we'd watch "Mary Hartman Mary Hartman" together.

And what about Anderson Fair, the folkie place w/darts? Great bar, great live folk music. I haven't thought about these places in light years. I may be dating myself w/some of these as I am a bit older than some of you. What about that Reggae bar in the Village. Gosh, I got around.

and if we really want to go down nostalgia lane, my sisters, who are even older than me, used to go listen to music at the "underground" Catacombs Club in Market Square. Cool baby, can you dig it type of stuff.

emd, you are involking more memories. Shame on you.

I totally forgot about Rockefellers. And, I still want to know if anyone else went to Numbers in the 80's....besides me.

So, your friend worked at La Carafe? That's amazing. Was this perhaps in the mid to late 80's? If so, then she probably waited on me.

I think I know what you are referring to with the Catacombs Club at Market Square. Was that right there in downtown on the same block as Old Spaghetti Warehouse? If so, then I went there, as well, and believe it or not, my father took my mother there on their first date in the mid-60's.

Statia, you are sweet re mid-late 80s. This was like mid-late 70s.

Yes, Market Square was down by Old Spaghetti Warehouse. Amazing about your Mom and Dad and the Catacombs.

Was Numbers that two story somewhat neon dance club (I think, but not sure, that it was sort of on the north side of downtown?)?? If so, then yes, I went there.

What about Kay's Bar in the Village (Rice crowd)?

oh wait- Numbers was on Westheimer right in Montrose, right? BIG dance club w/video screens, they played disco when I went. Oh yes, I went there.
Waht about Cody's, the jazz place at the top of the bldg. on Montrose. I used to go see Kirk Whalum there when he was a student at TSU and played w/Paul English band.

I guess most of us went to Numbers once. I took a date to see General Public. My wife, before I met her, was such a regular they would comp her. I don't know why they put Men and Women on the restroom doors. No one paid attention to them.

For old times sake, this link has some pictures from the 74 Springsteen concerts at Liberty Hall. http://www.brucebase.shetland.co.uk/gig1974.htm. The Liberty Hall concerts are considered one of his best 55 concerts. I read an interview with Bruce Springsteen where he joked he has met more people who attended the Liberty Hall concerts than there were seats.

Rockefeller's is closed. It is an event space.

Anderson Fair is still there. Just as dark and small as ever. We went there a few months ago to see a friend of ours perform. Even after they became successful, Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen used to go there to perform unanounced every Christmas when they were visiting their folks. What is amazing is the back room has thousands of reel to reel tapes of previous performances going back to the 70s. Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith, B.W. Stevenson, Jerry Jeff.

Cody's is now Scott Gertner's Sky Bar. Still the same place (jazz, patio, dance floow) just different management and name. Do you remember seeing Scott play around town back then? Many of my friends would go the Metropol to see him.

If you have been to Kay's have you been to Valhalla, the Rice graduate dorm bar?

Oh, I'm envious that you saw Kirk W. playing. I remember him associated w/ the Jean Michelle Jarre Rendezvous Houston concert in 86 or 87.

moldy,

Just a "thank you" for your recommendation of Yia Yia Mary's near the Galleria. Went there on Saturday night after our BIG WIN at Reliant Stadium! (Hook 'em!!) Anyway, loved the place. Service was absolutely terrific. The manager even came over and asked how things were: I told him a travel club I belong to recommended the place. He was impressed! Gave us two complimentary baklavas for dessert -- yum, yum!

Next night we dined at Willie G's, and also had a great meal - red snapper topped with lump crab and shrimp in a lemon butter sauce - TDF delicious!

My first "taste of Houston" gets a rousing thumbs up!

I must know all of you from my former life in the Houston nightspots!
The Caribana was the reggae place in the Village. Very popular for the 3 for 1 happy hour.....(I guess that dates me.)
Kays and Valahalla, wow! Us non-genuises from U of H would go to see how the other side partied. And what about the other, fancier (gay) dance club, Rich's? And the infamous dark makeout bar, Marfreless? I'll be in Houston this weekend, these posts remind me that I need to get out and about......

Made it to Caribana, but not Rich's. My wife, in her punk days before me did go.

But, did you hang out at the Cattle Guard?

Kopp -

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad someone else enjoyed one of my suggestions. If you liked YYM, you will definitely have to come back and try some of the other places!

Hi Statia,
No, we didn't make it to the Boardwalk. Nobody told me there was so much to do in Houston! Our weekend was jam-packed.

Besides the game, we were able to enjoy the Natural Science Museum (Princess Di's wedding gown - wow!), next day took a drive through Galveston, then back to the Space Center for the afternoon before the trek back to Austin.

Oh, and the beautiful holiday light displays around Memorial Park. Lovely!

I know we won't wait so long to go to Houston again.

I've not been to see the Princess Di exhibit. Did you encounter much of a crowd?
