The bbq and seafood are two different Goode Co. restaurants. I've never eaten at the bbq one. I liked the seafood but it isn't in my top three seafood restaurants in Houston.

I really like Tin Roof BBQ in Humble for a terrific loaded baked potato or Beef n Bun in Spring Branch. Beef n Bun hasn't had a noticeable face lift since the 1970's but their chopped beef will always be my favorite in town.

How casual do you want, and will you have small children? Within walking distance, suggest Capital Grille or Restaurant Ronit (both better for adults). A little longer walk or very short drive, suggest Arcodoro or Grotto (nice, kids OK). Agree with Yia Yia Mary's on San Felipe, or Maggiano's on Post Oak nearby for casual family fare. A bit further away, El Tiempo Cantina for Mexican or Fogo de Chao churrascuria would be recommended.

Post Oak Grill - but save it for a night when you want something nice and not so casual. Nice lighting, dark and quiet. Very good food, somewhat pricey, but very nice. It is a short cab ride from the Galleria.

It is nice to see such active and positive posting about Houston. I have been discouraged in the past about the negative posts here about the city. It has alot to offer.

Wow! Such great recommendations!

We're heading to Reliant Stadium this weekend, and fogo de chao sounds like it would fit our dinner bill perfectly. And thanks for the weblink on citysearch. Gives lots of good info.

Yia Yia Mary's sounds wonderful also. The Pappas chain of restaurants is popular here in Austin as well, but we don't have this Greek one. Will look them up as well.

Good question, great answers! Thanks all.

Also like Crapito's for Italian on MidLane, very short cab ride from Galleria.

I agree! It is great to see other Houstonians posting. We seem to be a rare breed! Also, I'm delighted to have some new restaurants to check out.

If you go to Fogo's, be sure to wear stretchy pants.

Speaking of stretchy pants.. ...is Brady's Landing near the ship channel still open, and if so is it still good?

Does anyone remember Boston Sea Party on Westheimer? That place had the most fabulous seafood buffet I've ever been to. I was sorry to see it close.

How casual do you want. Jeans? Slacks? What price range? How close? Walking distance? Less than a two mile drive?

Upscale near the Galleria, I suggest Masraff's.

I second Americas. Interesting space, great food. I think that might be your best choice for New Years Eve

For barbecue in that area, I would go to Luling City Market. Much better than Goode Company.

King Fish Market on Richmond is closed. I don't know about the one on Katy Freeway.

I would pass on Taste of Texas. To me, it is loud, overpriced and mediocre steaks. Saltgrass has same quality steaks at 1/3 price. Also, Taste of Texas is nowhere near the Galleria.

I am not as keen on Yia Yia Mary's. You have to order at the front. Food was okay, not great, Service was slow. I think Alexander the Great Greek, Mykonos and Cafe Lilli have better food, and Great Greek and Mykonos are much more entertaining.

You might consider La Strada on San Felipe, if you like Italian. I really like Piatto's on W. Alabama behind Dillards.

Besides Cheesecake Factory and Maggiano's for upscale chain restaurants, Grand Lux Cafe (also owned by Cheesecake Factory) and Canyon Cafe are pretty good.

Are you from Fort Worth or a TCU fan?

Enjoy your visit.

In response to the previous post, I guess proximity is subjective. I'm sorry if you felt Taste of Texas was not in the right location. In comparison to the distance I must drive to reach that side of town, I consider them to be close to one another. I offered restaurants all around town.

Yia Yia Mary's may have changed its style of service since you were there. I went there during the Astros playoff games and we ordered and were served by waitstaff at our table. I'm pleased that some more Greek restaurants were posted. I look forward to trying them!

I dined at the King Fish on I-10 about a month ago. I didn't know the other location was closed but I never dined at that location.

I'm curious to know more about Massraff's. Do you have a particular item you would recommend? Can you give me an idea of pricing?

Statia-

According to citysearch.com, Brady's Landing is still open and has some good reviews. The website gave it lower ratings than patrons who commented. I haven't been there since high school!

I really think that we have followed in one another's footsteps for years. My parents favorite place to take out of town guests was to Boston Sea Party!

Inside Loop 610 on Westheimer is Churassco's. It is South American and they are known for their steak but I found their red snapper to be oh so good. Excellent food and service. I wouldn't say it is a fancy restaurant but I would dress a little nicer than jeans and a button down. For New Year's Eve, I would try to get reservations.

moldyhotels, the last time I ate at Brady's was about 1992 and it was still quite good at that time. I know my mom has been there since then, and was involved in many bridal shows there over the past few years, as well.

I'm so glad someone besides me remembers Boston Sea Party. I ate there a number of times, but the last was taking my mom there for Mother's Day....when I was in high school.

Statia -

May I be so bold as to ask your age? It seems we have much in common. I'm 36.

I second Michaelangelo's on Westheimer and La Strada for Italian. I now live in LA, but lived in Houston for 6 years and visit about 4 to 5 times each year...I usually try to go to one of these each time I am in town!!

What do you know, moldy, we are the exact same age. Have you always lived in Houston? Maybe we went to high school together.

Masraff's is priced around the same level as Mark's. I have had the Foie Gras, the Duck Breast and the Tenderloin. All were excellent.

Another restaurant near the Galleria I like is Ouisie's. It is casual with great food. Sorrento's, Richmond at Chimney Rock, is another great Italian in the area.

As for Taste of Texas and Yia Yia Mary's, everyone has different tastes. Considering the people that crowd Taste of Texas, my view is in the very small minority (Okay, Robb Walsh agrees with me). The food at Yia Yia Mary's is okay. My point, not clearly made, was that you order at the front with waitstaff delivering the food. For my sensibilities, that format is not an evening celebration restaurant. Besides, when going to a Greek restaurant, I want people dancing on tables, yelling Opa! and breaking dishes.

I am about 10 years older than y'all, so Boston Sea Party was not an option when I was in High School. It is close to where I gree up and I did know a member of the family that owned it. We had Trader Vic's at the Shamrock Hilton and Monument Inn, which, by the way, is still open. For an adventure, we went to a Greek restaurant near the Ship Channel filled with sailors on shore leave. For the life of me, I cannot remember its name.

I am 50 and I used to go to Michaelangelos on dates when I was a 17 - 18, so it has been around for a long time...

Does anyone remember Zorbas?

I remember the Greek place by the ship channel. I used to go there with friends from UST. Man, what was the name of that place. It will come to me. They served Retsina and there was lots of dancing.

Monument Inn - we went there every year to celebrate my parent's wedding anniversary. Wasn't that the huge family style dining place by the San Jacinto monument where they brought out all you can eat?

These are memories I haven't thought of in a long time! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

But does anyone else recall Grifs Hamburgers in Bellaire where they had 10 cent hamburgers on Monday nights? Or Princes Drive-In? Ones-a-Meal?
