Ousie's is still there? Wow. Good natural food. What about Hobbit Hole on Kirby? If it was still going they'd really do well w/the Lord oF the Rings frenzy. I used to get the Bilbo Baggins sandwich there.

First, my bad. I meant Simposio on Richmond at Chimney Rock.

Hobbit Hole has moved to Richmond.

My favorite burger place was Bellaire Broiler Burger, which is still there.

When I was in junior high, we used to go to a hamburger place on Hillcroft that at each table had olde tyme (spelling is correct) by which you placed your order. Best chili cheese burgers.

I haven't thought of Monument Inn in ages. I used to love the Hobbit Hole when I was in my early 20's, and of course, Princes was always a treat on a casual date. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, y'all.

Is Cafe Annie still good? I've always heard a lot about it, but have never eaten there myself.

I think it is funny that we haven't seen jfikar back in his/her own thread! I think we've made some delicious suggestions! Now, if I could just find the time to go to all of the suggestions made. This has to be my favorite thread about Houston in a long time!

Putting a new twist in the thread, [blue] What are your favorite restaurants to go to for dessert? [/blue]

And what did I do wrong? Wasn't my [] stuff done correctly? *sigh*

Oh, Statia - I grew up in Spring Branch. How about you prior to high school? I know we've mentioned where we both presently live.

moldyhotelsaregross: House of Pies on Kirby, at 4 a.m.!!

Why have ALL the restaurants moved onto Richmond??

Athens bar and Grill- BINGO!! I've been bursting brain cells all day trying to think of it.

Broiler Burger -- also a favorite of mine. Blue cheese bacon burgers, mmm. On Saturdays I used to go the self serve car wash next door, wash the car, go to Specs, and hit Broiler Burger.

Anyone remember Felix's Mexican restaurant close to Broiler Burger?

moldy, I grew up in the Clear Lake area and graduated from school there, so I guess we aren't school chums after all. But, I'll bet we attended some of the same football games.

emd, I fondly remember Felix's Mexican Restaurant in the Montrose. I guess that's not the same one you are referring to, though. I go to Houston almost yearly, but it's been awhile since I've been in the Montrose. I would probably go ga-ga now seeing the likes of Michaelangelo's, La Strada, Numbers, Felix's, Daquari Factory, etc.

Sigh....memories. DH DOES keep saying that we have to go back to Mark's and that isn't all that far. Maybe we could stop in at Daquari Factory on the way.

EMD - Oh, the idea of going to the House of Pies at that hour makes me laugh! I am definitely snug in bed then.

Speaking of dessert (I'm trying for color again)
I loved Dolce Freddo for gelato. I wish they hadn't become another Ben & Jerry's ice cream store. I can get that at the grocery store.

I went to Felix in Montrose area too and liked it but didn't love it. What is the "must order" item on the menu? For as long as it has been around, they are surely doing something very right.

Well, the more I think about it, HOP is sounding awful good. Think one of you would be willing to step in for my obligations tonight and I can go grab dessert?

I'm curious - How often are there GTGs with the Houston crowd? I've only read of one since I've been posting. It sounds like many of us would enjoy similar things.

What about Monterrey House mexican restaurants, where when you ordered tostadaa you got those corn tortillas that they somehow inflated with air? They looked like flying saucers.

The Felix's in Bellaire was the original one I believe. Ms. Felix used to go around to the tables there.

Statia, this is almost as fun as your Firday night poison thread!

oooo, yes. That ranks up there on the desserts. The thinest and lightest pralines on earth, the melt in your mouth, where did it go type. I wonder how many "Summer Specials" I ate at Monterrey House...

Oh, if we are talking pralines, we can't leave out Brennan's.

And

Oh, gosh, I totally forgot about HOP! Late night desserts or even breakfast.

When I left Clear Lake, I moved literally right behind "The Summit," better known now as the new Lakewood Church, so that was my stomping ground for a number of years before I moved here to the island. I went to college in the area, too.

What is the name of that diner that is on the fork of Kirby and Richmond (I think), just before you reach 59? It's a 50's style diner that had really good food when I was in the area.

Speaking of desserts, is Executive Sweets still there on Kirby? Sigh....

I don't know what Felix's did right that they are still there. No, they weren't fabulous, but still good. And, I haven't thought of those brown sugar paper wrapped candies at Monterey House in years!

How about Ninfa's? She was a friend of my mom's before she passed away and her kids even babysat my sister and I once while the mom's went to a retreat. The original Navigation location was always the best, though. Is that one still around?

Speaking of Mexican food, anyone ever been to Last Concert Cafe on Nance near downtown? Good food, good beer, great margaritas, and live music. You had to know to "knock three times on the red door" to get in. I once saw Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top walk out and immeidately put on his "cheap sunglasses." It was a priceless moment considering it was about midnight.

And, speaking of poison, how about La Carafe on Congress and Travis downtown. My favorite all time place in Houston for poison. I was a regular there for years and spent many, many happy occassions there.

Oh gosh....somebody stop me! I'm buying a plane ticket to Houston tomorrow.

I just thought of something else.

You Houston folks have to tell me if Fitzgerald's or Blythe Spirits are still around. I can't begin to count how many local bands I saw between those two.

And, the think I think I miss most about living in the islands is the festivals that I regularly attended in Houston. The Houston International Festival, the Old Town Spring Festival, Blessing of the Fleet in Kemah, the Christmas Boat Parade on Clear Lake, the Rennaissance Festival, Crawfish Festivals, etc. The list could just go on and on.

And people say there's nothing to do in Houston.

59 Diner.

Original Felix was on Montrose. Teh son still runs it. Talked about closing down, but decided against it when people started to go again.

The urban legend is that the building housing the Last Concert Cafe was a brothel in earlier times. Knocking on the door allowed the proprietor to approve the guest.

Fitzgerald's is still open. I live about three blocks from it. It had gotten a little seedy with Gen Y punkers. Starting to focus on Texas country music (Asleep at the Wheel, Cory Morrow). We'll see how that goes.

You forgot the Greek Festival.
