Not a thing to see...swamp, swamp, and more swamp. I enjoy scenic drives and don't mind being cooped up in a vehicle for hours on end, but that is the most awful drive I've ever made in my life. And, I've had to make it more than once. Trust me....fly.
However, if you HAVE to drive, then I would suggest a stop in Lafayette, maybe? That's where I've overnighted before.

I agree with Lafayette. I was amazed that I liked Louisiana. The swamp is so different than anything we have in Oregon. The old houses were fantastic. We also went to the living history museum near there. I can't remember the name - help?
There is an excellent restaurant in Lafayette - Prejeans. It was very fun to try different types of food (alligator and frog legs!) and listen to cajun music. All so different but fun.

I live in New Orleans and have family in Houston so this is a drive I make about 3+ days a year. There is not a lot directly off I-10 but if you are willing to venture a little bit off the main road there are some things to see. Between Baton Rouge and New Orleans on a road called River Road where there are a lot of the old plantation homes. Oak Alley and the San Francisco Plantation are both interesting.

I'd also recommend stopping at an old plantation or two. Some of them offer lodging. I haven't stayed the night in any of them, but on a couple of tours, I've thought it would be a neat thing to do.
Even if you stay on I-10, driving over the swamps is an interesting experience. It's such a fast trip that most people don't break it up.

Agree with Statia that this ranks as one of the world's least enjoyable drives, even in good weather. It's about 400 miles and a good 390 of them are just plain ugly. If you have the time, do veer off the interstate to savor some local color. River Road plantations are neat. Staying overnight in Lafayette is a nice idea, it's about the halfway point.

The drive from Houston to the Tx/La state line is not the best in the world, particularly because the roads are so bad. But once you reach Louisiana, there is more to see and do. Lafayette is a great spot to stop, especially to eat and I agree that Prejeans is the best. It's not far off I-10 and the food and music are excellent. It's also my hometown. The River Road plantations are also awesome to see.
