I like having the little bottles so that I can save space in my bathroom bag when travelling. Right now I have quite enough so I've stopped collecting the stuff. Since many hotels offer complimentary coffee in the room and I don't drink coffee, I take those packages each day. Those are my husband souvenirs and he is quite happy with the varities that I bring home.

What I use: shampoo; cotton puffs; cleansing pads
What I take once in a while:
-lotion (for the car or in the winter overcoat pocket);
-soap (for camping trips);
-mouthwash bottle (empty out their product and fill with Listerine - great size! Listerine is both a mouthwash and a disinfectant);
-slippers (only overseas hotels offer these, I use them to line suitcases to buffer more fragile items);
-loofah pads
I take one of these items only if I've forgotten my own: small sewing kit, nail kit (including nail clippers), toothbrush
When overseas, I also take one envelope from the hotel - to keep the small change in. When I go through six or seven countries and end up with all this multicolored paper and various odd looking coins, it's hard to remember which currency goes with which country. The hotel envelope usually has the hotel address on it, so it's easy to remember which currency is in that hotel's envelope.
Everything else is left behind, including the coffee, robes, bed linens, towels, lamp shades, chairs, tables, and even the chocolate - not good for the complexion!
Also a tip for the maid - the most forgotten of all the service people.
Have a great trip! And bring a large suitcase for all those freebies!

Two things: I do take handfuls of straws from fast food places, but only when they're individually wrapped. This is because I refuse to drink soda straight from the can (gross!). I keep the straws in my glove compartment for when I need one on the road.
And, chocolate being bad for the complexion is a myth. Take it from this die-hard chocoholic who has never had a problem with acne in her 40 years (OK, it's probably only been 35 yrs of eating chocolate, but you get the idea).
