Hotel near ABC building - inexpensive

Hi there...I'm going to take a trip to NYC...while I'm there I'm going to audition for a show....at the ABC building on 57 West 66th Street....I have no idea where anything is there....I need something that isn't going to break the bank...but is safe....$200 - $250 tops......much cheaper hopefully...but...room service is not a bad thing.....not pushing my luck in New York....any help.....need it quick

The hotel that would be closest is the Comfort Inn Central Park West. It may be cheap but rooms are teeny tiny-fair warning. I think nicest moderate hotel may be On the Avenue. Neither of these would have room service.

The Salisbury is a nice budget hotel on west 57 st-so walkable to west 66th.

We stayed at that Comfort Inn--it was so awful that we were going to have a big sign with the letters DIS made to put in front of the word comfort.

I'd suggest Priceline.

First- when are you going. If in high season (late Oct to Christmas) you'll have trouble getting anything for $200.

Second, New York has an extremely efficient public transit system (many subway lines that are fast and efficient) and buses all over the place, but that do take somewhat longer.

Also, there are thousands of cabs.

And wouldn;t it be better to get a nicer hotel and spend $10 on the cab ride to the audition than just stay wherever is nearest? (The immdiate area - 4/5 blocks - doesn;t have many hotels and they are mostly VERY upscale.)

If you tell us when you're going and what else you plan on doing, people can make more suggestions.

I do agree with nytraveler. Get the best hotel you can within your budget as long as it's in midtown or upper west side. If you're just going for a night or 2, bidding on Priceline is a good idea. If you stick with 4* hotels in midtown east, midtown west, upper midtown/central park, you should do great. If you don't know how to do it, read up on biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com. Meantime, you should book a cancellable reservation. See what's available on quikbook.com

Hopefully you'll see this post....I'm leaving on September 25 - returning on the 28th....I plan to go see a couple of plays (on the 25th and 27th)....the audition is on the 26th....at 6:00. I'm completely unfamiliar with New York...but would happily do a cab ride...what the heck...probably easier...Anyway...the Comfort Inn is charging me $259 for the first night and $289 for the two consecutive nights....not exactly a bargain....what gives?

Not sure where you're from - but those prices are normal rates for a budget hotel in NYC at this time of year. If you came in December they would be charging $400.

The suggestion is not that this is a high rate- but that you can get places that are much more pleasant for the same price. Getting anything for much less in really unlikely.

I see...I just read several posts regarding how (cheap/inexpensive) Comfort was...so I thought it was going to be less $$....it's not a bad price overall....but from what I've read....I think I can do better....even if I pay more....it would be worth it to look for another property..

Marguerite, I'm afraid that this price is quite good for New York in the early fall. You could stay at the Gershwin Hotel (get a superior room) for less, and it has a decent location within walking distance of lots of good restaurants and the subway. The Milford Plaza (great location, so-so hotel) might also be cheaper. However both of these hotels will still be over $200. The Larchmont is on a lovely street in Greenwich Village and has TINY singles with shared bath for a bit over $100; I've stayed there, and it's acceptable if you don't do anything more than sleep in your room. The Chelsea Savoy has some very small singles that are less than $200; again, a good location in a great residential neighborhood but very tiny rooms, but these will have a private bath.
