I'm sure others will ring in but the Hotel Del is very nice, I've been there for brunch and tea. Lovely dining areas.
Also the Hotel Valencia in La Jolla is lovely and I think the ocean view in La Jolla might be a little more dramatic, cliffs and all.
La Jolla and Coronado are a little ways apart from one another both pretty. Depending on what you want to do while your here, LJ is a more central.

The Del. There are not that many other options that are right on the beach and first class.
While I agree that the La Valencia might well be up to par with the Del, it is not on the beach - near it, yes, overlooking the ocean, too, but not right on the beach.
