Hotel in NYC

After reading some posts about TS, I'm now concerned about our hotel reservations. Staying in late October, Candlewood Suites on 39th Street, any issues or problems with this location?

I don't know the hotel but I like the location -- it's near a lot of restaurants on Ninth Avenue.

It's near Times Sq which is a popular tourist hotel location. There's nothing wrong with it, although it's not one of the more charming neighborhoods. The hotel seems to get good reviews on Tripadvisor, so if the price was right, I'd say stick with it.

You are near Times Square but not "in it". I think the location is convenient for restaurants on 9th, transportation, and it's a perfectly safe area (use your head as you would while traveling ANYWHERE). The hotel is fairly new, and from reviews on TripAdvisor is very clean. If you are happy with your rate, I keep the reservation and not give it another thought. Enjoy your trip!

There's nothing wrong with this location, and the side benefit of being a few blocks south of Times Square, which is significantly quieter than the busier blocks north of Times Square, is that you have the proximity without the hordes. I'd keep this reservation; I see no reason to change it based on the area unless you find a much better deal in a quieter area like the east 30s or perhaps a tad closer to 34th Street (although the Herald Square area is also extremely crowded ... especially right around Penn Station and not that much better). And you'd need to be able to cancel this reservation without a penalty of any kind whatsoever.

There's also a very nice Courtyard by Marriott in the east 50s on Third Avenue and a Residence Inn "Time Square" on 6th Avenue, which is a little more central than the Candlewood Suites. Either of those would also put you close to transportation and restaurants without being in the thick of the Times Square crowds. Generally, I feel it's better to be a little east of Times Square than a little west because it puts you between all the major subway lines except for the 8th Avenue trains, but that's more of my personal preference.

Most of the restaurants on 9th Avenue are north of 44th Street (and some of the real bargains are in the west 50s), so you're within striking distance (10 to 20 minutes by foot) from plenty of good places to eat. You can also walk easily down to Kyochon and the Korean restaurants between 32nd and 35th Streets.

I think you need to tell us what you read and what your concerns are. This is a new-ish hotel on an unattractive block somewhat west and south of Times Square. How did you come to choose this hotel and do you have any other options? The reviews are mostly glowing on tripadvisor.com although some people don't like the block.

Thanks for all the input. I chose this particular property because we can use reward points and so is not costing us a dime to stay there. And I thought this would be pretty close to the subway as well. I really do appreciate reading all the input on all the postings. Looking forward to a great time in a great city.
