Hotel help in Carmel/Monterey!

We are trying to decide between hotels in the Carmel / Monterey area. I am finding rates that are terribly high. We haven't been to that area for several years, but just can't pay more than $175/200 per night. We would like recommendations for something within walking distance to village and ocean in Carmel that will accept older children. Please help fast! Placing are booking up. We were going to stay up the coast a little in Santa Cruz, but can't find any decent lodging.

We stayed at the Dolphin Inn in Carmel about a month ago, with our two kids. It's a former motel, but the exterior is pretty, and the rooms were clean and nice. Breakfast is served at your door in a basket each morning - the kids loved that. It's a short walk to the middle of Carmel and a 15-minute walk to the ocean from the Dolphin Inn. Looks like the rates are in your range (we stayed in the family suite, which is a bit more expensive).

Would you consider Pacific Grove? Check out the Bide-a-wee.

I agree on checking out Pacific Grove as another choice instead of Carmel/Monterey. We stayed there last summer and it was wonderful. We stayed at the Asilomar which was great. Real close to the ocean and the dunes. From our room we had a great ocean view and it was a very affordable kid friendly place. Asilomar is a conference grounds place that does accept reservations to the general public. We were close to the town of Pacific Grove and were able to get to Monterey and the sites very easily. Good luck with your final decison.
