Hotel Coronado in May

We are thinking of taking a vacation to the San Diego area in May.

Is the wheather good at this time?

We want to take Amtrack and then get a car to rent and go to coronado island and stay at the hotel Del Coronado, the historic one. We also want to go to water world and the San Diego Zoo. We figure a four day stay at the hotel. our baby will be almost 2 at the time. How does this sound with the transportation and stuff?

L-Don't know where you are coming from but taking the Amtrak and then getting a car should work fine. I am assuming you mean Sea World when you say water world. Four days would work-one day for the Zoo and one for Sea World. That gives you two other days to see the sights in San Diego and Coronado. I think it's better to have plenty of time when traveling with a two year old-can always take breaks for naps, etc if needed.

As far as the weather in May is concerned, you never know. Away from the coast it should be nice, in the 70's but the coast area is generally still not very warm, high 60's. We have a condition here called "June gloom". There is a heavy marine layer that hangs over the ocean and even inland. Sometimes the sun will burn it off by the afternoon, other days you might never see the sun if you are near the coast. Even though we call it "June gloom", it often starts in May and can hang on for weeks. Some years however we get very little June gloom. I actually think for doing activities such as the Zoo and Sea World, May is a nice time because it's not so hot. But if you are also wanting to enjoy the sun and sit on the beach, you take a chance coming in May or June.

We stayed there this May for the 1rst time and it was perfect! It DID get quite cool in the evenings, though. Killer hotel. Great choice. We had what they called a small room in the historic section but it was NOT small at all, to us! The bathroom was huge too.

Enjoy,

Don't miss the Trolley Tour. It is a great way to get around, and informative and entertaining. There is a stop right near the Hotel Del. The Del is a great place to stay, although their story about being haunted kept my daughter awake!

We were in SD over Memorial Day last year and visited the Hotel Del and the beach, the weather was wonderful. In fact it was ideal.

jvrab-Yes this year the weather in May and early June was exceptional. Didn't get too much "June Gloom" until later on. I think May weather is good, it's just that some people come during that time and are a little disappointed if it happens to stay cloudy most of the day.

Typically September and October are best, but it sure rained a lot this October - set records.
The Victorian rooms @ Hot Del are wonderful - many lesser rooms are motel 6.

Make sure you have enough time in your itinerary to just hang out at the hotel. I was there at the beginning of September and it was so nice just to hang out at the hotel. We didn't stay there, we stayed at the Marriot on the bay side of Coronado, but we spent some time at the hotel and it was terrific.
