Hotel Beacon Parking in NYC
I'm wondering about the parking while staying at the Hotel Beacon in NYC. Hotel recommends Carousel Parking l/2 block away on Amsterdam @ 75th. We have a van and parking is a whopping $39.00 according to the Beacon's website! I am told this is normal for most garages to charge more for suv's or vans. I checked iconparking.com but do not see anything else close by. New Yorker's, or those who have stayed at the Beacon, is Carousel Parking about our only choice to go with? Thanks!!

No, this is not your only choice there are lots of garges in that neighborhood. But they will all charge extra - at least $10 per day more for a van or oversize SUV - if they can take them. Since these garages are generally underground and have very low ceilings there are strict size limits on the veicles that can be parked - the garage I use won't take vans or the giant SUVs at any price because they're just too tall to fit under the ceiling beams. Depending on what you're using your van for you may want to leave it at one of those giant semi-storage lots where you pay for each in and out. You just drop the car there for several days and get a cab to your hotel. I know there's one near 125th st but not the details.

Parking in a garage in the area is just as expensive as garages in midtown. There is an outdoor lot at 62nd and 11th Avenue where 24 hour parking is considerably less expensive. It is less than 3/4's of a mile from the Beacon - a $5 cab ride with tip. If I come up with the name I will get back to you.

Rob, Thanks...I would very much appreciate the name of the lot @ 62nd and 11th if you can come up with it. Being from the midwest with ample parking most everywhere, I just never thought about having a problem parking our van in NYC!

The parking lot is called Central Parking System. It is between 59th and 60th on West End Avenue. West End is one block west of Broadway. 24 hour rate is $16. Telephone is 212 265-1189. Central has lots of garages - they may have a web site.
