Horseback riding in Virginia

Hi - we will be in Northern Virginia for a weeks holiday next month and my sister and are trying to find a place we can go on a day ride (Western or English - it doesn't matter). we are both experienced riders and would like to ride out so we can see some beautiful scenery - with a guide or without. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

We will be staying with friends near Fair Oaks/Vienna area - but are willing to drive an hour or two to ride.

There are a bunch of places in nearby Prince William and Faquier counties. Unfortunately, not being a rider myself, I don't know the names of the places. You might want to try the yellow pages or chamber of commerce for these counties. Sorry I can't be of more help. By the way, the further west you go (towards the Shenandoahs) the better scenery you'll have!

Marriott Ranch about an hr. or so outside DC is popular. Guided, walk - trot. Scenery ok, could be a little more exciting. There's a place out by Dulles that lets you go unguided -- never been, but I like unguided over guided anyday. Can't remember the name.

Donna is correct about the Marriot ranch located in Hume,VA. It can be reached by a road off rte 522 south of Front Royal, or by a road off rte 211 west of Warrenton. Best bet would be I66 from Viena and exit at Rte 522 south at Front Royal.

I used to foxhunt in Prince William and Loudon Counties but the territory was lost to sub-divisions.
