Hoover Dam Tours
How long do "Most" people take at Hoover Dam? I read somewhere that there do not give tours anymore (since 9/11/01). If this is the case - what is there to do and approximately how much time does it take?
Thanks!

We took the tour in April of last year, as day trip from Las Vegas. I recall that the tour was shorter than it used to be for security reasons. There were some areas that were off limits. I thought it was a worthwhile trip. We did the drive and the tour in an afternoon. Perhaps the whole thing took about 4 hours, tops.

My husband & I took the HARD HAT tour on September 8, 2001. As of October 2003 (our last visit) the Hard Hat tour still had not reopened. It is a terrible shame because even for me (very little interest in the dam), it as great!
I believe that limited tours are still available however. The drive from LV takes approx. 45 minutes one way and depending on your level of interest you could easily spend 2-3 hours.

I have been there pre and post 9/11. It is still worthwhile! The current tour will take you inside the dam to the turbine area where you will learn some fun facts. What it does not do (as it did previously) is take you to the very bottom of the dam, go outside and look up.
After the inside tour, the tour becomes "self guided" There are stopping points of interest with guides that give talks about where you are at, what you are seeing and will answer your questions.
There is also an indoor..sort of museum, that is very good. Make sure to see the movie on the building of the dam.
I highly recommend it, time depends on you and the weather. 2 hours at the dam itself is probably common.

A quick tip.If you take a tour...don't do the "delicious" lunch included package. They literally dump you at a casino in the middle of nowhere...while they take "tour" only people back to the hotels. Our "delicious" lunch included horse flies all over the buffet.Needless to say...we didn't have so much as a coke.Waited by the front door for over 2 hours for the bus to come get us.Skip Ethel m's too....just a ploy to get you to buy the chocolate.

Chezzle, I assume you're talking about taking a "package" bus tour from Las Vegas? If so, of course, forget it. I've never understood why people wouldn't just rent a car for the day if they didn't have one already and do the drive themselves. Generally far cheaper for even two people than two tour tickets. Those package things are nearly always a joke, but I'm surprised they actually gave you an option of not doing the "delicious" lunch -- must have had too many complaints or refusals from people who didn't want it.
