Honeymoon to Thailand Canceled - Help

We were supposed to leave on our honeymoon to Thailand this Sunday. The Thai military has just staged a coup, so we are canceling the trip and looking for alternatives. Anywhere is possible so long as we can book in the next 24 to 48 hours. We definitly want to leave the US, would rather not go to Central or South America, and would prefer a "beach with other activities" destination. Our plan for Thailand was a few days in the south on the beach, a few days in the north and a few days in Bangkok. Any and all advise would be appreciated.

that's too bad, jag. Are you sure you need to cancel? It may already be over. I suppose it is better safe than sorry. Good luck.

jag, it's your honeymoon and I respect whatever decision you make. But I agree with tabd, this might not be necessary. If I were going to Thailand in the next week I would not cancel or change my plans, but you must do what's best for you.

From what I'm hearing, this activity is only in Bangkok, so have you considered just avoiding Bangkok and spending more time elsewhere in Thailand? I know you have to fly into Bangkok, but could you go directly to your next destination? This would be a lot less hassle than booking something else at the last minute.

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful honeymoon.

Might I suggest Australia. (Assuming cost isn't an issue.) The Cairns area in the north of Queensland has plenty of sun, surf, and activities. Sydney is a great city.

The one caveat is I'm not sure how good their weather is as they are just ending their winter.

I heard a person in the Thai go'vt quoted this morning. He joked that they used to have coups every other month until 1991, and they were way overdue now.

I think this is one of those coups that the people wanted and there should be no inconvenience to the average tourist. There was no violence and the King hasn't had any harsh words for the victors.

My Christmas return seats BKK to Narita are waitlisted though, so I'm hoping others cancel.

Consider the Riviera Maya and area: ruins of ancient cities, beautiful colonial towns, incredible beaches and hotels, fabulous diving (even cave diving and snorkeling), stunning scenery, ecoparks, lots to do; and the price is pretty good.

I'd check with the US State Dept. website about any travel advisories to Thailand before canceling my plans. If there are none, I'd still go.

When I travled in that part of the world for my honeymoon, I found the US State Department website to be the least helpful in figuring out the situation in Indonesia.

I actually found the Australian equivalent to be more frequently updated and to contain far more information. Given the number of Brits that travel to Thailand, I'd suggest to check the British foreign office website, too.

How about Tahiti..I would do Moorea and another island..Moorea is stunning and the overwater bungalows are fantastic..I like staying at the Sofitel Ia Ora..
Also, if you fly to Australia you can get a stopover in Tahiti..just don't stay in Papeete..

Have you visited all of the Hawaiian islands yet? I know it's part of the US but still....it's Hawaii!

Alot of people think that Tahiti is 12-15 hours from LAX but it really is about 7.5 hours long direct max and even though I love Hawaii and from LAX it is about 5 hours+ so for an extra 2 hours+ you have a completely different country and surrounding beaches that Hawaii can't really come close to..
Great deals to be had but the last minute deals will be your best bet since you are leaving on Sunday..
You stated you wanted a beach location..some airlines will go to both..why not..Hawaii then Tahiti then Australia..
Can't wait to hear where you are going!

Hi jag1234!

Its unfortunate about your honeymoon but please accept my congratulations on your marriage!!

Here are links to last minute travel deals at travel zoo and expedia. I saw some beach-y destinations. Check em out:

My honeymoon, too, was cancelled at the last minute and I was in a state of panic-I went to a travel agent and they were able to offer us lots of last minute deals. Just another thought…

Good luck!!

Best wishes on your marriage. If you have a US Representative who is alert and informed one other pre-cancellation phone call you might make is to his/her office to see if they can get you any predictive info other than what is on Dept of State website. (I am a big fan of calling Congressman's office - my dtr interned in ours one summer and answered and helped with all sorts of phone stuff like this).

Good luck - I empathisize since we have a close friend whose 19 year old son is spending a year there and she is trying to get in touch with him.
