Alaskafan, there's a rest area as you approach Homer with an incredible view of the Homer Spit. Also take the skyline drive that also overlooks the town but from a different angle. We did not have time to visit the Carl Wynn Nature Center. The boat ride over to Seldovia is not as interesting as a Kenai Fjords trip. It's a very small town where we mostly walked around, watched eagles, so you might want to skip it. We did an overnight with a flight back to Homer. The flight was short but over a glacier and we circled when the pilot spotted a sheep. The ride can be a little rough but if you are interested in a short flightseeing trip on a very small place I would recommend it. Smokey Bay. To get to Homer you will be driving through Soldotna. This is a good place to stop for lunch. There's a marshy stretch between Soldotna and Kenai where you might see a moose. Otherwise Kenai is a slight detour. I liked the display at the Kenai visitors center very much. Another place to watch for wildlife would be the road to Captain Cook State Park, again paying special attention in marshy areas but I would not take time away from Homer. Hope you have a GREAT trip.
