hirschorn, african, Sackler and freer
We have friends visiting from state college PA and went to these museums today. We parked right across the street from the hirschorn and I paid for parking with a cell phone app. What do you think about that?
The guide for our hirschorn tour of the 3rd floor started with a giant half round blue orb, black in the middle. Like looking into a little piece of outer space. Then a Rothko. There's a lot more to a Rothko than you might think. Then to a black and white profile painting, then to a big loopy installation called two bodies wooing.
Then hot dogs. Then to the African art museum which had three floors, called heaven, purgatory, and hell. Lots of really cool stuff. A parade of dog like figures, jeweled shoes and prayer rugs, a video of somebody dancing, swathed in rich silk fabrics.
Most importantly, we sought and found the secret underground passage from the African art museum to the Sackler. The Sackler had a really cool exhibit called Filthy Lucre with a peacock room remix. The peacock room by whistler is shown in shambles in the remix, reflecting disagreements between whistler and Leland on a dining room renovation.
Then the secret passage from the Sackler to the Freer, where the real peacock room is. The guard there doubles as a guide and does a great job talking about the room.
So this is something for you to do the next time you come to dc.
