Stu: "Rainforest - Easy - are you really sending someone to a "theme" restaurant at the Wharf."

No, Stu, I'm sending someone with teenagers to a place that teenagers might enjoy. There aren't many plaes with fake lions roaring and fake boa constrictors hanging out of trees...

mwessel: sorry, I'm on the road and sometimes don't have the time to reread what I've typed!

Those were two separate thoughts. You can walk along Fishermans Wharf and see a number of restaurants where they have an outside ounter and where they have people who will crack your crab for you while you watch. But those crabs are expensive and really aren't worth it. Just fun for the kids to watch.

The Rainforest Cafe is a restaurant totally separate from the crab places.

mwessel: if my recollection serves me, you already posted asking for dim sum places, is that correct?

Oh, one place in Japantown that has nothing to do with Japanese food: Sophie's which is way at one end of the main complex of buildings that's Japantown - Sophie's serves a wonderful gelato in freshly made cones! Oh yum!

We liked Mel's Diner--just your basic fries and milkshakes and such--sorta HappyDays feel and cute and fast and filling and not costly.
801 Mission Street (right near the Marriott)

We also liked John's Grill at 63 Ellis between Powell and Stockton which is where Sam Spade ate--the Maltese Falcon Room is upstairs. It's not really a teenager place, not cheap, but so atmospheric and good food when we were there last fall. Live jazz. Any detective fans in the family?

A couple of old time San Francisco places, The Grubstake on Pine Street and Tommy's Joynt on Geary, both casual and inexpensive.

I'm in the minority as not liking Lori's Diner, very mediocre in my opinion, but conveniently located for Union Square and one of them is open 24 hours.

Yes, Tommy's Joynt! (Corner of Van Ness and ??) Quite an experience. Basic Hof Brau, but delicious, full of character and characters.

Mom - I don't think any of the places mentioned here are where I would want to go for a honeymoon dinner.

Mom:

Agree with Stu. These are restaurants for young teens. Maybe you could start a thread asking for restaurants for young honeymooners in SF.

When we bring our teens and their friends to San Francisco they love to eat at the "food court" in the basement of the Bloomingdale's side of the San Francisco Centre -- everyone gets what they want and the food has always been very fresh and good...not your traditional mall food court food by any means.

ITA on the food court at the SF shopping center. Also nearby is the food court at the Metreon (just a little pricier), and hi tech teens will like it there. I also like Red's Java House for a quick breakfast or lunch on the Embarcadero with it's great views. Ferry Plaza building has reasonable options too. I like Zazie in Cole Valley near the Haight which has vegetarian options. Menupages is a good resource for dining. http://sanfrancisco.menupages.com/

Thumbs up on both of the food courts mentioned; also, although & haven't been there young friends of ours (20-somethings) like Zazie a lot. I'd also recommend brunch at Foreign Cinema - sit outdoors - very nice ambiance and brunch is delicious.

On the San Francisco Center (on 5th between Market and Mission) and its food court - it's not just for teens, adults love it there too! The gourmet food store had some really wonderful ahi poki once - oh, I've got to get back there soon!

Metreon's (Fourth and Mission) food court is great too but can't compare to the one in the San Francisco Center, IMHO.
