Help from LGA to Radio City

I am coming to town with my wife on December 14 to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. I have gotten myself in a bit of a crunch. Our flight arrives at 7:45. I bought tickets for the Rockettes 9:30 show. I have been told I will have a hard time making that work.

Any one have any good ideas of how I can make this work?

We will have carry on luggage so I need to stop at my hotel and put it in the room.

Where is the hotel? That's key here.

If you literally run out of LGA to the taxi line and jump in a taxi to your hotel, you may have a chance. December 14 is a Wednesday and will probably be a gridlock alert day (that means lots of traffic). Combine that with the fact that you are arriving during the height of rush-hour, and I understand the concern people have. Just realize that it could take as much as an hour to get to a hotel on the west side of Manhattan at that time of the morning, and you probably would miss the show in that case.

So say exactly where your hotel is, but I think a cab is the only realistic alternative, though one thing that you could do is to take a taxi TO the N/Q subway line if your hotel is close to a stop. Then it's a fairly quick ride into Manhattan on a very crowded subway train, but that could shave a few minutes off your trip and help you make the show. I think taking a taxi to the subway station in Jackson Heights won't help since the express trains are really packed at that time of the morning and the locals have too many stops. But the N/Q is fairly close to Manhattan at that point, and if you don't have to drive across the bridge or through the tunnel, then you might make it.

AM or PM? either way, a tough situation. I would contact Radio City Music Hall directly (phone, email, facebook, twitter) and see if you can exchange your tickets for another day or time, They may say no, but they may OK it.

If you are talking am - and have a car service sedan waiting for you - and depending on traffic and where your hotel is - you may have a chance - but I would try to trade tickets.

If you are talking pm - there is no way you will make it - since LGA flights coming in then are routinely late - often very late.

Also - do not try to put luggage in your room - checking in can take forever.

Just drop at the hotel and have them put in left luggage until you can get back there.

My son came into LGA two hours late last week. And the taxi line was extremely long.

If there is a performance on the 15th and you are available, I would call the agency that you bought the tickets from and BEG them to make an exchange. I would tell them that your original flight is canceled and the new flight gets you in late. Even though it says in twelve places that all sales are final and no exchanges, I have found in an emergency such as yours - when I have paid FULL price - they have made the exchange for me. Good luck!

I was assuming 9:30 am, but I see there's only a 9:30 pm show. I agree that there's no way this will happen. If you can change the tix, do it; otherwise, take a taxi and hope for the best, but there's very little (as in almost no chance) you're going to make this. I'm really sorry, but there are still tickets available, so perhaps if you can't actually reschedule you can at least book for another day and post your tix on StubHub and get something for them.

Also, having a car service reservation may or may not help you. I waited 15 minutes for a car recently to show up, and the very long taxi line had by then dwindled to nothing. SO who knows. Unless you want to pay a fortune to have someone standing in baggage claim holding a sign and keeping the car parked nearby. But that really does cost a fortune, especially if your flight is late (it can easily triple the actual cost of the taxi ... it would be cheaper to buy new tickets).

CALL and ask to EXCHANGE. Explain the situation, including your 10 year anniversary, that it's a special trip, that you don't know the city well enough to gauge the amount of time the trip would take take, etc. Be incredibly polite and apologetic and sincere. (This probably doesn't need to be said, but I have friends who work in theatre box offices and I am amazed at the stories of people who act entitled, rude, and pushy.) It's worth a shot, and I find responses much better when you talk to a real person.
