After trying a lot of sites, including Costco, I got the best priced reservations with www.carrentalhawaii.com and booked on four islands. It ended up I got even better deals (well actually I ended up being able to get convertibles from PRICELINE for the same price as the prebooked economy cars by bidding about a week before arrival on each island.
But try carrentalhawaii.

needsun: I just booked our Feb. 5-12 Maui rental car the other night. I don't normally wait this late to do so, but your post got me moving on it. And it was a good thing too! I too had one heck of a time finding a car!
I spent DAYS online, comparison shopping. All we want is a compact or similar, nothing fancy, just something to get around the island in. I finally ended up going through one of the national places, booking directly through their website with a coupon code I found. And we'll still be paying about $50 more than last year!
Good luck and let me know what you're able to find!
