9 more days til Maui vacation
only a few things "planned" (already booked): snorkel trip to Molokini, helicopter ride over Haleakala/Hana and a sunset horseback ride with Makena Stables.
and an oceanside massage at our hotel (Outrigger Wailea). we will have a rental car.
have discussed taking the ferry over to Lanai for the day. but i need some more convincing that this is possible without being part of a tour group or having a rental car there.
any other suggestions? my friend is not interested in driving to Hana, driving past Kapalua or doing much driving period. are these drives so spectacular that they are worth doing solo???
thanks for any advice!!

I think the scenic drive to Hana solo is worth it as you will be driving through the US's largest tropical
rainforest,
but be sure to pick up the CD or Maui Revealed Guide, widely available on Maui (at KMart/Walmart for example) or you will drive by alot of things. I found the park with the black sand beach and caves and the incredible
flowers
for sale along the road very memorable.

Hi Stellaluna. I've done the drive to Hana twice before, but as a passenger. It is drop dead gorgeous, but narrow, windy (long I) and long. There's also amazing hiking once you're there. BUT, as the driver, you may miss some beautiful scenery while simply watching the road. Since you're doing the helicopter tour, maybe save the drive for another trip? Whatever you do, have a great time!

Aloha Stellaluna,
Re the drive to Hana solo... are you an independant sort... do you enjoy driving??
I would embrace doing that drive solo,
but I enjoy solitude and driving. I wouldn't miss it!
Enjoy the islands... Mele Kalikimaka!

I don't think going to Hana in a van would be much fun--too curvy. I would definitely go up to Haleakala in the car though--it's much shorter drive on good (though somewhat curvy) road, and it is very different than anything else on Maui--you could go to the winery on same jaunt.
We will be at the Kea Lani at same time as your trip--can't wait.
