one day in maui

My family and I will have a rental car and one day in Maui the week after next. Can anyone suggest what they think are the can't-miss sights? The folks are 60 and 77, and I'm 38, if that helps with the recommendations. Thank you!

Haleakala is nice but if I had only one day, I would take the Hana Hwy and consider the drive around the back of Haleakala. If you end up at the foot of Haleakala before 4 pm, drive up and watch the sun set. I would rent a Ford Explorer just for "good clearance" on a sometimes rough road. Also, be advised that after Oheo Gulch the road narrows considerably. Read the ettiquete with regards to driving on a one lane road. For example, the car driving up hill backs down to allow room for the on coming car if the turnout isn't handy.

Drive to Iao Valley to see "wet" Maui. Drive to Kihei, rent some beach chairs and umbrella. Spend the rest of the day enjoyig Maui's greatest asset, the ocean.

The town of Lahaina might turn some people off with its touristy shops, we did an enjoyable walk there looking at historical sites, and the huge banyan tree taking up a block in the middle of town is amazing. And not to forget the many yummy eateries.
