Personally, I think your best bet is to research your airline choice, then keep checking. We're flying in Aug from Newark, NJ to Honolulu. I chose Continental for a few reasons. The first time I checked, the fare was $586. Didn't book right away. It went up to $610 & stayed there for weeks, fluctuating up & down just a few dollars. Got lucky one night, after checking twice during the day ($610) - just before bed it went down to $476!! After I booked my tickets, it went right back up again. It's all about patience & persistence, mixed with a little luck. Good luck to you!

Thanks for your replies...Im near Richmond va but could handle EWR and I check check check so hoping we can find something...Im told by Hawaiians that tourism is down...no wonder with these high fares. We are leaving the end of October so do have some time.

I hear that the airlines dump there inventory at midnight on Tues and Wed..haven't had any luck yet but have in previous flights..
I am pretty savvy internet traveler and its going to be down to the wire..
Also, I think with summer still going strong, no deals, even though we are leaving mid-Sept.
I think it was United that had rates to HNL from east coast from $163 each way.
Waiting for the last minute deals and vacations on expedia.
Good luck to all!

Im watching those fares like a hawk as well. I saw them go to $525 RT one nite before I had our hotel finalized...wow wish that would happen again. Where are you leaving from? Good luck to us both.

I am on email notification from Hawaiian Air (love them). I'm only in Seattle so it's a much shorter flight for me, but they're offering very good deals for the rest of the year (buy before a certain date, travel before a certain date, but they are generous time allotments). Seattle from $338RT.

US Airway is starting a non-stop flight from Charlotte, NC to HNL in Dec. I would keep an eye on that.

Definitely keep watching the prices. I almost gave up watching the prices to Hawaii for the rest of the year and then today, I saw a great deal and booked it: $290RT from Oakland to Honolulu in October! I didn't even think to check Oakland originally as I kept checking Sacramento (where I live) and San Francisco (near where my parents live, since my mom wants to go too).

Good luck in your search! I don't know the average price from the east coast, but check a few of the various airports around you as the prices will differ.

It was Hawaiian Air, which I love, but I don't think they have any flights from the east coast. I got it directly from the airlines website.

Have you tried setting up an airfare alert at airfarewatchdog.com? I have a permanent NYC to HNL alert set up, so it sends me an email when a good fare pops up (usually under $600 rt from the east coast). I've been getting quite a few of these alerts recently, as prices have been dropping.

Thanks to this email alert, I got lucky and booked a $256 rt (incl taxes) ticket from Newark to Honolulu for January a few months ago. The airfare watchdog alert was sent out about 4 hrs before Travelzoo caught on (though I do love Travelzoo too!), so I was able to snag the fare before it sold out!
