Did you consider the Mauna Kea Hotel? It is the ORIGINAL luxury resort in all of Hawaii.Used to be totally secluded, the haven of the rich, famous, and beguiled.I have heard since I wasnt around then, but 40 years ago,the beaches at the hotel were patrolled by security guards.Any perpetrators of the private property founded by the RockefellerFamily would be immediately escorted elsewhere.Just a thought.

Val...interesting post...which is more
"hawaiian"....Both are large luxury hotels that were built in an area that was carved out of the lava field and man-made beautiful....23miles from Kona, or any place else.....sort of going to Palm Springs with an ocean.
YES Hapuna beach is one of the best, that is Hawaiian.
7 days too long?.....Naw...just look at the things you can do and see while on the Big Island...
enjoy

I have stayed at both Hapuna Beach and the Outrigger Waikoloa...both are fine. Here are some differences: the beach at the Outrigger ("A Bay") is far superior for snorkeling and has calmer waters, although both beaches are among the best on the Kohala Coast; Outrigger has the benefit of being directly across the road from the "Kings Shops" which has convenient restaurants and shopping, among which is my favorite restaurant on BI, "Roys"; the dining at both hotels is not great, although the japanese restaurant at Hapuna Beach, "Hakone" is very nice (especially the buffet); Hapuna Beach is "posher" while the Outrigger is pleasant but nothing like the swankier hotels on the Kohala Coast. My personal preference is to save some money and stay at the more modest, but convenient Outrigger. My dining suggestions for the BI include: Roy's, Merriman's, Oodles of Noodles, and Hakone. 7 days is not too long; plan on spending most mornings on "day trips" exploring the island, and return mid/late afternoon to enjoy the beach and the sunset.
