We stayed in a cottage on a flower farm in Hana. It was just lovely - our favorite place of all the places we stayed on our trip. We booked it through VRBO. It was about $150 per night. Hopefully we will get back there some day.

Aloha from Kaua`i...

When Maui County officials decided to shut down all vacation rentals, Hana was their first target. It has lost nearly all vacation rentals, except the condos and the Hotel Hana Maui.

If you do happen to find a cottage or home to rent for your vacation, proceed with caution -- it could be shutdown before your arrival.

Aloha-- Its over $150, but we recently stayed at the Hana Kai, they have about 20 units. We stayed in an ocean view that was around $200 after taxes-- the unit was very clean, had a kitchen-- kitchen was stocked with dinnerware, utensils, pots/pans, etc.if you want to eat in. The bay view was wonderful and provided nice breezes (no a/c). They have non-ocean view rooms that run cheaper, but they face the road and houses across the street-- would not be as nice.

Hey auntie, I was on vrbo the other day and noticed quite a few vacation rentals in Hana listed. There are not nearly as many as there used to be. Are these ones that are listed the "legal ones" that had permits? Years ago I stayed at this one. It is still listed...if that means anything.

We have friends with a property on the fringe of Hana -- 4 houses, 3 of them were vacation rentals. Maui County lowered the boom on the whole area, giving owners just 3 months or so to "ceast and desist" all vacation rentals...or face large fines and having their properties condemned.

Our friends scrambled. They demolished the studio unit (which was a converted barn), sold one house, they live full-time in one house, and they were allowed to keep their `ohana cottage -- only for use by their family and friends.

There may very well be vacation rental units still available in the Hana area...but those owners are gambling. 8-)
