still homeless in hana
I have been reading about places to stay in hana, but have not heard anything about Hana Kai Maui Resort. Have read lots about Hana Hotel, but just can't stomach paying that much when most of the day we will be hiking. The rates at Hana Kai seem reasonable. Anyone been to Hana Kai?

There are many, many cottages for rent in Hana. The concept of the Hana Kai condos seems to contradict the whole idea of Hana, in my mind. They are a condhotel. I suggest you look for a nice cottage in a garden. There are plenty in Hana.

Must agree with here-today-gtm. This must be the place we stayed on our first trip to Hana. Sufficient, but we there are better options. Hamoa Bay Bungalow may still be wonderful. Even the tree houses would seem more adventurous than the condo. If you must stay there due to 2-3 night minimums elsewhere then it will be fine. Otherwise, I suggest you search the web. Good luck. Love that place!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree with the consensus here -- Hana Kai Maui is the antithesis of what Hana is all about.
No charm, crackerbox building...and rates _low_ with local residents when the recommend places for visitors to stay.
Here are some options:

I recommend the Hana Hale Malamalama (www.hanahale.com). A lush property on Hana Bay with several different structures on it providing different types of housing and varying rates. Lots of details in my trip report from last summer here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...1&tid=34436140
