Guggenheim's exhibit-Russia!

Has anyone seen this exhibit yet, Russian art at the Guggenheim? I'm flying to New York from Texas just to see it...that's why god made FF points--right?--for frivolous things like that. The NY Times says it is the talk of the town, and I hope that is true!

Hi kk,

I asked just the same questions a while ago. Chinacat was kind enough to give me her impression:

I think there's also a post on the Europe board. I'm seeing it Dec. 21, and I can hardly wait!

Thanks, dsquared, but that link won't pull up for me. I did, however, find a mention of the Guggenheim exhibit by Chinacat on a general NY trip report, but it was quite short. David Miller posted something, too.

So, after you see the exhibit on Dec. 21, I hope you will post your impressions. And I will too after I see it Dec. 11, a Sunday, which will no doubt be a ZOO!!

Can't wait to hear about it. I agree, that's what FF points are for.

No problem, kk. That's why God made cut and paste!

Here it is:

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and found it quite interesting. I'm not sure I'm a good judge as far as quality of the artwork. But it was a fairly comprehensive survey of art in Russia, from early religious art (icons and the like) through modern, abstract and cubist and so forth. SOme of the most abstract stuff at the end, I didn't like so much. But the Soviet era paintings were fascinating.

we arrived on a Sunday at about 10:30AM, and it was quite crowded. However, when we finished (probably about 2PM) it had gotten even worse. I think first thing in the morning would have been better on a weekend. I'm sure a weekday would be better still.

to think, I didn't even know it was the talk of the town when I went! We actually went because my husband is a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and wanted to see the building. And I really loved the permanent collections in the little corner rooms...the Chagall paintings and the room with all the Picasso's.

The other thing that we found really interesting was trying to figure out the political leanings of the Soviet era painters. Some of the earlier stuff...right after the revolution, struck me as very pro-Communist, pro-worker kind of stuff. Then later on, the artists seemed to be rebelling against the repression of art by the Soviet government. At least, that was my impression from a few of the works.

If you are looking for someplace to eat lunch nearby, I really like E.A.T. on Madison, around 82nd I think. It's run by Zabar's, and has excellent soups, salads and sandwiches. Or if you want fancier, Boulud is not too far away either. We had dinner there, but I understand they do a very nice lunch as well.
