The view from John Dominis at sunset (well, at any time) is beautiful.
When I had my 16th birthday, my parents gave me the option of having a party with all my friends, or going to dinner at John Dominis with my 3 "best friends".
I chose the John Dominis option - we were given our own table separate from my parents and had no restrictions on the menu - we thought we were so grown up.
I still have the photo taken of my friends and I from the lady that goes around and offers to take pictures of your table - I have fond memories of John Dominis.
Oh - and the food is good, too.

A number of years ago we had the opportunity to dine at john domini's. The view looking out over the water to Waikiki and Diamond head with surfers on the waves as the sun was setting was breathtaking. The restaurant was very elegant and pricey, but outstanding. Not sure which of the fresh fish selections to choose, one of the locals with us stated,"nothing beats fresh mahi mahi." To this day the phrase is one my family always repeats when at a seafood restaurant.

We dined at both Nick's and John Dominis in October 2003 while on our honeymoon. Frankly, I can't understand the appeal Nick's holds for people. We found the food to be only fair, the service rushed and indifferent, and the atmosphere dark and depressing with a 70's decor. Would never go back there.
On the other hand, John Dominis was exceptional in everyway and I would highly recommend a window table at sunset to enjoy the great view that others have mentioned. The only thing we found tacky at John Dominis was the photographer who went from table to table to take your picture and, of course, offer you a photo (for a price). We declined and the photographer moved on, no sales pitch or anything, so it was tolerable given that everything else is wonderful.
I would recommend either Ono or Opakapaka rather than Mahi Mahi. Mahi Mahi is widely available in the U.S. and you can likely pick some up at your local supermarket. You are not likely to find the other fish outside of Hawaii and they are excellent.
