good stop over on way from ME to NY

We are planning a short trip to Maine. Are there any recommended stops on way to/from NYC? Either a must do lobster stop, or a good overnight stay to break up trip but not get too off track. Is Newport way off? Thanks

Personally i wouldn't break up that trip. Better to get to your destination in Maine and half, say, three nights in one hotel, then to stop, unpack & pack, etc. All your "must-do lobster" is in Maine, anyway!

Since you refer to your jaunt as a "short trip to Maine," I agree with the previous poster. Why give up one night at your destination, when you have so few to start with?
PS: Newport is definitely way out of your way!
You want to get onto 684 to 84 to the Mass Pike and then onto Maine.

How far up in Maine are you going? Portsmouth might be a good stop. Take 84 to 290 to 495N to 95N. Several places available to get lobster.

Sorry - Correction - 84 to 90(mass pike) to 290 to 495N to 95N.
