Furniture in NYC
Hello.
I just moved to Manhattan and am now looking for space-saving furniture for a small studio apartment (about 20' x 20'). I'm not too crazy about IKEA furniture though I know their prices are supposed to be decent. Are there any good second-hand shops in or around the city to find furniture? E.G. bookshelf, loveseat/sofa, bed with draws below, antique chest/trunk, coffee table, basic stuff really.
I know it's not the season for garage sales but is there something like that in the city? Or good places to go for that? I know back home we just usually go to the more fancy, ritzy areas for the best garage sales.
Any advice would be appreciated! Just to keep in mind that I'm on a budget, looking for a good deal!
Many Thanks in advance,
gtrekker

Chelsea Flea Market on Saturday & Sundays.
Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth when they have furniture sales. They also have sales on damaged furniture, you can call and ask about that, it might not be called a damaged furniture sale LOL
The Village, Soho, plenty of interesting shops with possibilities. Have fun!
Congrats on your move!

There are tons of thrift shops all over the city. Where are you living and I can give you an idea of where some might be close to you.
You can try the 23rd St area, there are several between 2nd and Lex Ave. Also several on W. 17th St heading west, from 5th Ave.
Also try Pier One, they often have some nice things with a good discount.
The big Salvation Army is on the West Side, around 44th St ?, I think, but you can look it up.
Hope this helps.

In my day (oy) the Door Store was the place for what you want (I wouldn't buy a sofa there though). They're still around. There's one near you at 601 Amsterdam Avenue: (northeast corner of Amsterdam and 89th St.)
Here's the URL for NY Magazine's guide to Cheap NYC. It'll be useful in other areas too
http://newyorkmetro.com/urban/guides...heap/index.htm
They mention a few places in DUMBO, Brooklyn for furniture as well as propsfortoday.com a place on west 34st. that recycles props from tv/theater.
Craigslist is the closest NYC has to a garage sale. Crate & Barrel is worth checking (Madison & 60 st). There's a Pottery Barn for furniture on Broadway & ~67 st. Both of these may be having sales around now.

Hi Trekker-
I'm a budget-minded girl living in NYC...here's where I got all my furniture:
New King-size mattress - from the Macy's-Bloomingdale's Warehouse in Long Island ($50!)
A nice 5-piece bedroom set I saw at Broadway Futons (Broadway around 19th St) but found cheaper on the internet ($2200)
A solid mahogany art-deco bedroom set from Salvation Army on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn ($90!). You can sometimes find GREAT stuff here.
Couch from Jensen Lewis (in Chelsea)
Coffee table from E-bay
...And everything else is from Ikea (desk, shelves, lighting). You can't knock it...they've got great bargains. And a bus goes there from Port Authority.
Another nice place for new furniture at reasonable prices is West Elm in Dumbo, Brooklyn. www.westelm.com
