I like Bo Concept. They have a store on 23rd and Madison (I think). You can check out their website at www.boconcept.com.
I've bought a dining room table and chairs and just got a new bed and night stands.

I wouldn't consider ABC, Design Within Reach, or Ligne Roset to be in the "Not too expensive" category. But then again, we don't know what not too expensive really is in this case... Lucky, if you give a range, we could provide more help.
Ikea is good for cheap. I consider Bo Concept a nice step up from Ikea. I've look at Ligne Roset stuff and wasn't impressed, especially for what they charge.

Check out the Maurice Villency store on 57th Street and 2nd Avenue. Pricey but top quality. They have an excellant website that will give you some idea of the type of furniture they carry. It's at mauricevillency.com

There are some good deals to be had at Ligne Roset and most of the items are good quality. For example, a year or so ago, I purchased a beautiful dining room table (seats 6 easily)on sale for $2000. They should have some items on sale during this time of year.

Expensive-Depression Modern
All up and down Mercer St, Green St and WBroadway in Soho..
I wish I knew of some not too expensive places in NYC that are also quality but the two don't seem to go together that often.
Ikea falls apart in your hands!! But my friends in London think it is the best !
