My mother an 82 year old lady is arriving to San Francisco International airport on Feb 25th around mid afternoon. She is going to visit some friends in Monterey.

She could fly to Monterey--it's about an hour-long flight, with multiple flights departing daily from SFO.
Most people rent a car and drive to Monterey--it's about a two-hour drive if you skip the scenic route, and a car is necessary for getting around the Monterey Bay area.
Third option is some sort of bus or shuttle, about which I know nothing. I hope others can help with this...
Good luck!

This is the address for shuttles from SFO, if not working, go to SFO website, click on ground transportation, area to choose is "peninsula and south bay"
http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/tofro...sp-serv/to-sb/
There are 2 shuttles, contact them both to make sure they do take people from SFO to Monterey to avoid unpleasant surprises.
I must have done something wrong as my fare quote came as $265 Can't be that high!

Door-to-door shuttle or a connecting flight would be my choice since it sounds like she doesn't want to rent a car. My grandparents are in their 80s. They don't like driving the the Bay Area anymore, even though they know where they are going. So I don't blame your mom if she doesn't want to drive herself.
I wouldn't attempt public transportation because there are too many systems to navigate and it would take a really long time to make the journey.
We live in San Jose and take Super Shuttle to SFO and they have always been great. Check if they serve Monterey.

It is an hour and a half from SFO to Monterey - more if there is traffic. So I can't imagine taking a taxi. The cost would be huge if a taxi driver would even do it. Car service would be an option - I'd check the ground transportation section of the SFO airport to see which companies are available and then call and ask them the cost.
