Frederick MD dining
We'll be visiting Civil War sites around Frderick MD for three days in May and would welcome suggestions for area restaurants (casual style) for lunch or dinner.
Has anyone stayed at the Hill House B&B on W 3rd St? Comments? Thank you.

Tell me what you like to eat and how much and I can give you great suggestions. I haved lived in Frederick for 20 years so I can sway you to the right places.
You can't go wrong with the restaurants in town on market street, there is Spanish, Indian, Italian, American and brew pubs. Check out Fredericknewspost.com. On the outskirts of town around the mall is Pargos, Applebees, Olive Garden, Bob Evans, Perkins, Barley and Hops. On route 40 there are plenty of Chinese places, Japanese, BBQ- Famous Daves, Outback, Red Lobster. I just need to know your likings and I can direct you.

Unfortunately, Cindy, my spouse's tastes are rather plain - American or Italian are fine, as are pubs and BBQ. We avoid chains on vacation because we prefer to support local places that might not be noticed by tourists. Thank you for your guidance. I will check the website you recommend.

I live in Frederick and these are my suggestions. For a good steak The Red Horse on Rt 40 and Rt 15 is a Frederick tradition and worthy of its reputation. Dutchs Daughter is another lovely resturate with American fare. For Italian -downtown on Patrick St is Venutis and Nidos both have great fresh food. Welcome to our city - hope you enjoy your visit.

To Sue-
I've lived in Frederick for 34 years. I've gone to The Red Horse three times. The first two times, I had horrible steaks, but I attributed it to a quirk. The last time, I not only had a horrible steak, the complete meal, and the service was terrible! I had guests, so I didn't want to complain on the spot, so I immediately wrote a letter to the manager of the restaurant. They never acknowleded even receiving my letter. To all you folks that intend to visit the Red Horse--DON'T!! It's not worth it.

Boy Al I wouldn't go back to the Red Horse if I were you either. But I have had the exact oposite experiences. I have eaten there many many times and have never been disappointed. I take business guests there often and have been invited to parties and gathers there and have never left disappointed. Oh well - To each their own -I guess.
I agree the Provence is very nice on Market street and Jenifers (on Patrick St) has great desserts and light fare.

Will be staying at the Courtyard by Marriott in Frederick.
Looking for a good steak or fine dining restaurant. I see recommendations for the Red Horse and Dutch's Daughter in this post. Do you need a reservation for either and are they close to the Marriott?
Any other recommendations?

The food at Dutch's Daughter is good, but very expensive. Some would say it's over-priced.
I've eaten at the Red Horse one time, the meal was excellent...top notch.
Downtown Frederick, the oldest area, is filled with great restaurants. Brewer's Alley is fun, nice brew pub. Same guy owns Isabella's and Acacia, they're good too. Donnelly's, Tauraso's, the Tasting Room...so many places to eat. We love the margarita's at La Paz (mexican, their food is decent, not great) and go there frequently.

I'd encourage to visit the downtown area and choose a restaurant there. Out by the malls you'll find all the chains (Outback, etc.) but it's fun eating in the downtown area.

I live in Frederick. My favorite is the Brown Pelican. My husband and I go there for special events. Also enjoy very good steaks at the Red Horse. Both are pricy, but very good. Friends were at Acacia recently and the food was terrible. Venutti's is a good Italian restaurant. I dined at the Tasting room for lunch one time. Excellent food but I think a little overpriced.

PS: DON'T even think of going into the new Ethiopian restaurant. Although the food was good the portions on a couple of the dishes were very small and over priced! My friend ordered a chicken-type stew and when it arrived a the table, there in the plate was ONE chicken leg with a hard boiled egg in a tomato based sauce. $18!!! for one chicken leg!!???? Crazy!
Cacique is nice for Spanish and Mexican foods. It's right on Market Street.
