Four Seasons Hualalai
My family (girls 6,9) really wanted to stay here for our BI part of our vacation. Having stayed at the FS Maui and loved the atmosphere and kids clubs, I was hoping for a similar (if not better) experience on the Big Island. However, I was told that there are only a few rooms that have two double beds, and even those rooms can only accomodate a total of 3 people. My only alternative would be to get a suite (1,000!). Has anyone stayed in a standard room at this resort with 4 people? Has anyone gotten a better price for a suite?
My other choices for places to stay are 4 nights at Mauni Lani Bay Hotel and 3 nights at Kona Village. Will I be happy with those choices? Please do not recommend the Hilton as I really don't like those extra large, loud resorts. Don't feel bad for the kids because they will be staying at the Hyatt Kauai (which we have stayed at before) and will definately enjoy the pools there.

You are the second person that's posted on this recently, it seems that FS BI is not catering to families as much as other Four Seasons. I checked them out and ran into this too. We ended up going to a different island, but on the big island people recommended the Hapuna Prince and Mauna Kea as family friendly hotels, they have a family plan where the second room is 50% off and nice beaches, which I hear the FS does not have.

Kona Village is a "get away from it all" experience -- e.g. the rooms do not have TV's or telephones. But service and kids programs are first rate.
If proximity to a nice white sand beach is a priority then the Mauna Lani would be first choice among the hotels you listed. The beaches at Kona Village and BI FS are nothing special -- they're rocky and narrow.

FS Hualalai is the absolute most luxe hotel I have ever stayed in - much more upscale even that FS Maui. As I remember the rooms were quite large and two young girls ought to be able to share a double bed. This resort is spread out with a series of bungalow and buildings with anywhere from 2-8 rooms per building. Each room is oceanview. However I would not count on a kids club - this is definitely an upscale resort for adults. There is a very good Hawaiian cultural activities area in the main building below the lobby.
You might also consider the Orchid. It is further north on the Mauna Lani beach. Great pool, larger resort but not loud. More similar in layout and character to FS Maui [which I have also stayed at].

I called the 4Seasons BI directly and the main FS reservation center and both said that for fire code reasons, only 3 people are allowed to stay in non-suite rooms at the BI location. I know that they have an awesome complimentary children's program. That is one of the reasons why I would love to stay there but not at those prices!

Since I was planning my last minute vacation, I did check with the BI Four Seasons and they do have a kids club/progamme. I also talked with the concierge about the beach and she did verify that the beach was rocky and craggly and would require swimming shoes for feet protection if you stayed there.

WOW this is an old thread but here goes! UPDATE: I am booked for the 4S Golf Ocean View Room with two double beds for the month of May. I will be traveling with my husband and 2 girls ( 7&3 ) The 2 double beds do acommadate 4 people but are very scarce. MOst of their rooms besides teh suites only have 1 King bed which acommadates 3 people. Because of the value this is the most popular room for families of 4 at the rate of 580.00 a night which includes a rental car. Ive only heard rave reviews about this hotel and their childrens program.

Who did you make your reservation through? When I tried to make a reservation directly through Four Seasons, they insisted that you could not have 4 people in a standard room, even if it had two double beds. Did you go through a travel agency or did you book directly through the hotel? I wonder if they have changed their policy.

Hello There,
I booked directly through the Hualalai reservations number. If you go on their website, under their room categories , it will say that 4 people are allowed as long as there are 2 double beds. They did not give me any problems whatsoever. The hardest part was actually gettinng a room with double beds at the cheapest category (golf/ocean view) If you are making reservations, I would suggest calling the hotel directly asap. Seems like these rooms are booked till kingdom come. We will be there in May for 10 nights so I can post a update when i return.

Oh and I forgot to mention that Mauna Lani is very nice also. We stayed there last year for 7 nights with the kids. We had a wonderful time. Very quiet and understated place. This year we are choosing the Hualalai because I keep hearing it is leagues higher in every category then any other hotel on the island. But I will not know that till we arrive this May. As for Kona Village, I did not choose this resorts because 1: no A/C. #2 its all inclusive which meant that I would be bound to this place 24/7. We ended up doing many activities last year from horse back riding to snorkling cruises. #3 no A/C haha. Im from california and not use to the Hawaii humidity. SO A/C wis always a must. Other then that Kona village is a nice resort and also next door to the 4S. I heard their spa is not that great tho.
