Sorry, I can't think of anyplace spectacular in the area other than the chains as well.
There are a few B&Bs perhaps 25-30 minutes outside of the area (such as one part of a great restaurant, Joseph Decuis in Roanoke). But nothing beyond chains near the Coliseum.
