I would appreciate any advice about traveling by air with your pet. My daughter will be coming home (KH,NC) from PEI, Canada. I am relieved she is flying due to the snowy roads but we are concerned about her pet dog-Corky. Being a jack russell he is already a hyper dog and needs "doggy valium" for long car rides. How will he be able to handle a plane ride? Is he considered small enough to ride in a cage with her? Does it have to be 1st class? I have heard horror stories of pets in the cargo area. Any input would be greatly appreciated.Thank you, dlpiano

No, it does not have to be 1st class.

You need to check with the different airlines because each has slightly different rules, for how many animals they allow per each flight, type and size of crate/carrier required, etc.

Just from what I have seen and read, a Jack Russell, I think, is a good size for the carrier under the seat..but definitely would need a knock out pill ~lol~
I have seen it in Coach, not just First Class.
Go to the website of the airline she will use and read their rules and regulations regarding pet travel.

You need to make arrangements ASAP because typically they allow only one animal in each cabin (to reduce disturbances I guess). Also check with the airline on the cost and the exact size and type of carrying case allowed (it must be able to fit under the seat - so one of the soft Sherpa type cases is really better).
