Flying with silver place settings
I am flying to NC from Maine in Dec. to my son's wedding. I want to carry silver place settings with me rather than checking them through. I have tried Emailing and calling USAir and have not been able to get through. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Is is possible? Are there any other ways of getting through to USAir or other web sites or phone numbers I could call for the information.
Many thanks for your help.

It is the TSA that determines what items you can or cannot carry on, not the airline. Check out their website.

I do not believe they will allow you to bring knives in your carry-on. Although the place settings may be valuable, you probably will have no choice but to check them in your luggage.

Sorry but ever since 9/11 it is against the law to bring any type of knife or sharp pointed instrument in your carry-on luggage. If you try to take it through the security check point it will be confiscated. The only way you can take it on your flight would be to put it in your checked luggage. The fact that it is a gift or that it is of high value is irrelevant. If you are concerned about loss, consider sending the place setting to your destination by Federal Express.

All of the airports I've been in don;t even allow real silverware (vs plastic) in the restaurants inside security. I can;t imagine there's any change they would let you on the plane with either a knife or fork.
Why not simply FedEx them?

I am a flight attendant. You can not take the knife on board. You could take the forks and spoon. I am with the others...mail and insure...atleast the knife. If you check it, hide it inside some clothes, shoes, etc. Better yet, if you haven't bought it yet, buy it online, save money on the purchase price, and have it shipped to them.

I agree with previous posters re: Fedex the package to yourself at the destination in NC. Fedex is reliable, and the packages are traceable....it will save you a lot of hassle and problems of carrying around additional luggage items.
