I'm sure most Fodorites don't put valuables in your checked luggage, but you might find this story interesting anyway. I certainly did!

I have never put valuables of any kind in my checkin luggage travelrfromtx but I sure know people that have. They now claim they don't as they don't trust the approved locks or don't feel comfortable leaving the luggage unlocked. But a piece of luggage can go "missing" never to be seen again..well not until it gets to that place in the S/E where they sell all the items that were in "missing" luggage that is.

I also don't put valuables in checked luggage and I do use TSA locks even though I know they don't guarantee anything. What I didn't know - according to the article - is that the airlines are not responsible for theft. If they're responsible for a lost bag, why aren't they responsible for theft? Who is?

I often have to fly with $1,500 - $3,000 worth of photography gear (tripods, ball heads, etc) in checked bags (and $15,000 - $20,000 worth of cameras and lenses in carry-on, plus a laptop) ... I use the TSA keyed locks and hope nothing goes wrong. So far, after many trips as far away as Kenya and Tanzania, nothing has been stolen ...

The story was interesting though, thanks for posting.

can you no longer buy additional insurance for any bag containing goods worth more than the simple amount airlines designate per bag?

i know once we insured my husband's new golf clubs for their actual value, paying an additional policy and fee to the airline. but this was MANY years ago.

The TSA guy gets positive feedback on eBay, e.g.
"Excellent and honest Ebayer!"

Maybe he should run for President.
