Float Trip at Hoover Dam
I sure would like some help... We are going to Vegas in Nov. and would like to do a short float trip. I have found many that go out from Hoover Dam. Just wondered if anyone has done this. The tour of the Dam is really not that important to us. The trip is described as an 11 mile float. I'd just like to get the feeling of being on the water and looking up the walls of the canyon. We've done the helicopter ride and landed on the canyon floor at sunset. Fantastic trip!! Thanks for any advice. Our decesion is between this float trip and a short horseback ride.

I did a canoe trip down the Colorado from the base of the Hoover Dam 2 years ago and its definitely well worth it. Our trip was self guided and took about 8 hours and the price was $40 pp. I went in July and the water temp was surprisingly cold (55F). Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the company we used but it was located in Boulder City.

Black Canyon is an awesome place. We launch our small boat at Willow Beach and then go upriver as far as we can (near the dam) and then float back down. Always see some bighorn. We also stop at the several hot springs.
Early November will probably be OK as far as weather is concerned but late November is tricky. It can get cold and wet then. And the sun only shines in the canyon for a few hours.
I would do it in a warmer month. That water is ice cold because it's coming from the bottom of Lake Mead.

Dumb question but are there any currents involved or is it flat, calm water the whole way? Would love to do this on our August trip but one member of our family is not a fan of the whole white water rafting thing.
As well, is it too hot in August for this? Any outfitter recs?

It was very smooth for the first 7.5 hours of my trip however for the last half hour a storm unexpectedly rolled into the canyon making the water very rough. My canoe took on water and others in my party flipped. It was pretty scary at the time but makes for a good story now.Moral of the story-check the weather before you go.

There's about a 4 mph current below the dam down to Willow Beach. Then flat water as the river becomes Lake Mohave.
August should be fine if there are no thunderstorms predicted. It is monsoon season. The river mitigates the heat with its cold water and if you get hot, just dive in.
