Seaplane to Dry Tortugas - AM?

We're scheduled to depart on the 8Am flight in order to miss the crowds from the ferries and have some quiet snorkeling. Is this a good plan, or will it be too chilly to snorkel at 9:30-10:00? How are the water temps? Do we need to bring our wet suits?

Melly, what time of year? The later in the summer, the warmer the water temp.

We'll be doing the tour 4/23. Guess we'll pack in the wetsuits as the water temps look to be in the low 70's, but it's better than crowds, I suppose.

Did the same trip in November and didn't have a wetsuit. We had no problems at all.

You should be fine. It is a very enjoyable trip.

Mellyz: I was just snorkeling at Sombrero Light this morning at 10:30 a.m., and the water was just fine with no wetsuit. I don't know if there is much difference out at the Dry Tortugas, but I'll find out this Monday, as we are scheduled on the AM flight. When are you going to the Dry Tortugas (or have you already gone)?

Went on the 8 AM flight 4/21/3. Toured the Fort first, then snorkled from about 9:30-10:00. No wet suit needed; it was great! Had to look around a bit, but we finally found the reef. At first it seemed like there was only grass, but you have to swim around the moat just a bit, then out toward the buoys. We were very pleasantly surprised by all we saw!
