First visit to NYC
We are a family(Ma, Pa & 2 teanage daughters) from Uk visiting NYC & USA for first time, staying at The Hudson. I am sure that we will have plenty of sights to see around the city but am looking for genuine Ny places to eat and see. we are flying home on New Years Day at 8 am so want to spend a fabulous New Year's Eve celebrating. Any recommendations?

For genuine NYC places to eat you need to give us a budget ranges and cuisines you like or dislike (there are dozens of great restauratns, hundreds of excellent ones and god knows how many good ones. And since NYC is such an ethnic melting pot- we have immigrants from more than 110 countries - the ethnic foods tend to be more authentic than they are in most places.
Real NYC food would include great bagels and lox, real deli - plus every other ethnic food you can think of - Dominican? Ethiopian? Peruvian? You name it! Just don't go into any chain restaurants.
As for "genuine" places to see - that would include everything but such abominations as Madame Tussaud's and those ridiculous Hop on/off buses. (Real New Yorkers either walk or take the subway.)
It's impossible to make specific recos without knowing your interests
For a fabulous New Year's Eve stay s far away from Times Square as possible - it is sheer hell. Pick a more casuale restaurant on the upper west or east side and then go see the fireworks in Central Park. Or go to New York Magazine online and check out the Events section.

I am getting the vibe that, although exciting, times sq is not the place to be on nye.
the concert at st johns sounds good - can u buy unreserved seat tickets or do u have to queue?
We are happy to try any food type.
as for amount to spend - on nye we would be willing to pay up to $200 for a meal for the 4 of us.

The concert at St John the Divine sells out far in advance. I would google and find out if there are still tickets available.
Times Square is defienitely a no-no. More than a million people packed in like sardines - but in cold and windy and possibls snow - from 4 or 5 in the afternoon until midnight standing the whole time in pens controlled by the police (heavy anti-terrorism security) with no facilities.
For $200 for 4 people you can east very well in neighborhood places and also quite a few moderate - assuming the 2 adults don't have more than 1 drink or glass of wine. You should explore the area around your hotel (which you should get TODAY - many are long sold out).
