Favorite homebase on Cape Cod?

My husband and I are going for 4 days to Cape Cod for the first time. We are 30 somethings, and most interested in the natural beauty, maritime, and culinary aspects of the Cape. We'd like to stay in one place all three nights, and take day trips elsewhere. Our ideal location would be very near (or on!) the beach, with plenty of options for walking to find tasty breakfasts and dinners. We're looking for moderate rates, and the rooms don't have to be fancy or cutesy - lace and floral patterns are a little lost on us. We're looking for relative quiet, scenery more than action, good food more than shopping, locals more than tourists. Did I mention we like to eat?

Thanks for your thoughts!
