Favorite Alaska Web Sites
I'm going to take my first trip to Alaska in the summer of 2004. I've begun my planning by visiting some of the official state Web sites, but I'd like to check out other good ones. Please help me narrow my search by posting a few of your favorites. Any topic will do, so long as it pertains to traveling in Alaska. Oops. This suddenly went from narrow to very broad. <g>

I like The Milepost (http://bizlink.themilepost.com/ptemp?tid=12362), and I think that you should buy the book too.

I happen to think that the Anchorage Daily News-sponsored www.alaska.com is about the best I've seen. Not just travel info, but useful insights into the people and places that make up the Great Land.

Gardyloo, I am with you.
Tim, if you are planning on visiting Homer check this one www.cabinsinhomer.com If you have any specific accommodations in mind it is not too early to book them now.
Listen to ALF and buy Milepost. It is mostly advertising but has some useful information if you are going to drive.

Also try your library for THE MILEPOST, also a good supply of used copies at www.half.com, wait for the new edition 3-04 before purchasing. Head to each area/city's visitor web site and cruisecritic.com Alaska board. Plenty of first hand information.

I enjoy the Anchorage Daily News www.adn.com for human interest stories, environmental news, and what's going on. Recently, for example, there was a story about sea lion behavior that is being studied by scientists. Another story that has been running is about the cattle that have been living on an island for more than a 100 years and their removable, pros and cons. From the calender of events you might find something you can attend you would otherwise miss. Somedays there have been some beautiful photos on the site and there's a great link to photos of the aurora. Sadly there is also news of tragedies from the shooting of a famous wild goat to loss of human life in a storm. If you plan on taking a dog sled ride you might want to see if the musher participates in the Iditarod and follow his or her progress during the March race. There are daily updates and human interest stories during the race. Follow the link from the ADN site.
