Family trip to lake area

We have a 2 year old and would like to visit somewhere for 3 days this summer. We need more than just a beach... however, not too spendy.

Would like a place with play area and family friendly lodging.

How about Duluth, or Bemidji?

I'd suggest the Brainerd Lakes area, there's tons to do even if it rains. On Gull Lake there's a cute little resort called Sandy Beach Resort. Lots of little cabins and (obviously) a nice sandy beach. You could also try Grandview Lodge which has nice golf packages. I think they also have an activity center for kids

My family had a cabin in the Brainerd area when I was growing up. Not a real great area for "getting away from it all in the wilderness," but lots of family fun. Animal parks, Lumber towns, resorts with beaches, and if they haven't closed it yet, Paul Bunyan Land. A giant statue raises his arm in a wave and greats your child by name. I was pretty old before I figured out that my dad was giving them the information when he bought the tickets. I honestly thought they remembered me from year to year. I also recall lots of kiddie rides.

We love to go to Duluth and then on up the North Shore. It is beautiful and there are lots of lodges, cabins, etc. Not much in the way of beaches in that area but most places have pools and we see lots of people with children and they all seem to be enjoying themselves.
