According to the official NPS site
www.nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/wetseason.htm
The Everglades are typically hot and humid from May through November. ... The profusion of mosquitoes and biting flies can make outdoor pursuits downright uncomfortable.
It would appear that April is just before the mosquito season. No guarantees, of course, but it should be safe.

just take a good bug repellent with you to be safe. The everglades is an unforgettable experience. My first time there was in april, and I had no problems what so ever. There are ample wildlife opportunities. I don't know where your jumping off city is, but if you go from Miami there is a park where you can see aligators and such...the name is illuding me (anyone?)

In my opinion, April is the best month for the Everglades. The weather is getting a bit warm to hot, but still dry and windy and that keeps the mosquitoes at bay.
The main reason for going in April, however, is because gators are out in full force by then. You'll see them sunning themselves and swimming. In the dead of winter, gators hibernate and you'll rarely see them. Even if you did, they would be lethargic in the winter.
Now skip to April, and the gators will be out in full force, and they will be quick to respond. You really get the full effect in my opinion.
Good luck and you'll have a great time!

It has been record heat, pretty summerlike here. The mosquitoes will be pretty heavy so take a good bug repellent. I like the Anhinga Trail and the overlook. Since it has also been very dry, alligators were very easy to see all over during our walk.
