I think many times, the rooms are all pretty much the same with no noticeable differences. So you won't be treated differently. If some rooms are renovated and some are not, you can expect to get the unrenovated rooms, depending on the hotel's occupancy for your stay. If there are better rooms and the hotel is near capacity, of course you are going to get the lesser room.

I've used Priceline four times at two different hotels and have always been treated kindly.

I would also add that the Mariott in La Jolla is not really well known for above average rooms. It's not even in la Jolla, it's across from the UTC mall - the area is actually called University City(it's on the border between the 2). All the other hotels around it are pretty much the same too - Hyatt, radisson, etc. So it's entirely possible you did get a nice room, for what they have anyway.

Got a room on Priceline at LaPavillion Hotel in New Orleans. Stayed there before and had a much nicer room with Priceline. Also stayed at Clarion 5th AVe New York and had a very nice room.

just bid on a 3* in Seattle and got the Seattle marriott waterfront, and got it for $60. On the Marriott website, the cheapest room for our dates is $275. I`ll be happy with any room they give me!
This will be the sixth time I have used priceline, and I have never had a bad experience.
