Do I need to rent a car in Key West?

I'm going to Key West in early September. And I'm wondering if i really need to rent a car or if everything is pretty accessible by foot? Can anyone help with some info?

I would say no, a car would be unecessary if you are staying on Key West. It would also depend upon where in Key West you are staying. I have seen people also rent the golf carts for getting around the town. Not sure of the price on those. Others may have more info on this site.

As Duchess posted, it depends on where you are staying...if you are staying at a motel on Roosevelt you will probably want a car to get to Old Town...if you are staying on a property in Old Town, you probably won't need one unless you want to shop on Roosevelt's very commercial strip where there are chain stores such as K-Mart and chain fast food restaurants...you can rent a moped to get around Old Town if want to explore beyond Duval or just for the fun of it, but you have to be really careful on them.

No car neccessary, even if you are out on the blvd. as a cab is only $5.00 to get downtown. The island is 2 miles by 4 miles.Have fun!

I agree...a car is not necessary, especially if you stay close to Duval and want to stay in that area. I drove down there a couple of weeks ago, and stayed on Roosevelt, so I drove into town. Parking is difficult to find, unless you go to one of the few parking garages, like the Hilton's, and then it's $2.50 an hour...

A car is not only unnecessary, but a pain & the parking in Old Town is limited & therefore, expensive. Most B&B's offer bike rental, which is a fun way to get around & see everything, if you aren't brave enough for the Moped.

Just got back two days ago from down there. We took our car (stayed on Marathon), then when we got to Key West we parked at I think it was Travelodge, and rented scooters for the day (tandem for 24 hours was $65). Noticed that cars in Key West was a major hassle - parking almost non existant, and really it was so small, the scooter got us everywhere we wanted to go, and parking was a breeze.

Just got back myself. I recommend you stay in old town, we stayed at a great place...the Eden House. Nice room with a porch swing. We rented bikes. Cars seemed to be a real hassle, no parking and traffic. I did also see those little golf cart type vehicles which seemed pretty handy, but you still have to park them. Bike racks are everywhere and make you feel more in tune with the town. Eat at Blue Heaven on Petronia!!

Car are unnecessary in Key West and stay away from the scooters as they are very dangerous. Stay in the area called Old Town and just rent bikes or walk. If you rent bikes, always lock them up. Bike theft is a very big problem there.
