Diving from key west to ft lauderdale

When our week is done we have to drive back to Fort Lauderdale from Key West. We leave on a Saturday (4/30) from key west and our flight is at 6PM out of ft lauderdale. What time should we leave and what should we do on the way up or where should we stop for a nice lunch?

A good bet for lunch (with atmosphere) is the Islamorada Fish Co., about MM81.5, on the left, behind the World Wide Sportsman, as I recall. Though lacking in atmosphere, my favorite is Mrs Mac's Kitchen, on the left, about MM100, in Key Largo. Get the fish basket with onion rings instead of fries...

I'd leave Key West as soon as possible in the morning. The drive is not particularly onerous. However, you do always run the risk of having your journey blocked by an accident. It's a possibility, not a probability. I've made that kind of drive several times, and had no problems.

I'd leave at 8AM to make a flight out of FLL and include lunch. I'm superstitious and would wait until I got out of the keys to eat. Alabama Jacks on Card Sound Road would be far enough out of the keys for me.

Anything, and I mean anything can turn that four hour drive into an eight hour nightmare.

Great advise on the leaving by 8AM response.
True, you can start out on a sunny day and a smooth drive then -BAM- there is an accident ahead and you miss your flight!
Have a great trip.

Be sure to check the local news and/or station for accidents on the turnpike. We were there a couple weeks ago and traffic into Miami was backed up for miles because of a nasty situation. Have fun!!
