Drivng from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West

Can anyone give me an idea on how long this drive will take?

Thanks
Sandy

It depends on traffic. The one time we did this drive it only took about 3.5 to 4 hours each way but there was hardly anyone on the road. It can take about 5 hours. We have flown into EYW since then.

Don't plan to bee-line from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West. Speed limits can be 35-45mph in some areas. The drive is really worth every minute once you enter the keys. Plan to stop either for lunch or the night at least half way. Islamorada is a great location for an overnight down or on your return. The views are spectacular especially over the seven mile bridge. This is a drive to savor--you won't regret slowing down the pace and enjoying!! That's what the keys are all about.

We stopped at Alabama Jack's (my husband is a big Buffett fan and this is one of the places he mentions in his zillion songs about the keys) for beers and conch fritters. Cute place and had a fun band playing while we were there on a Saturday afternoon. Tried to stop at Manny & Isa's on the way back since their key lime pie had been recommended by a friend but they were closed (it was a Tuesday - I don't know if they are closed every Tuesday). We rented a convertible and really enjoyed the drive. Marcia is right - the views are beautiful.

Plan on 5 hours. Most of the drive, once you are in the Keys, is two lane with 35-45 miles per hour speed limit.

We got there in about 3.5 - 4 hours. Of course, I have to admit we did go over the speed limit. I suggest renting a convertible. We had one and had fun driving the way to Key West from Ft. Lauderdale. Also a great way to catch a little sun with the top down. Most of the time, it's a 2 lane road (one going to and one going from). If you think the car in front of you is going a little too slow, it might be hard to cut them off. They do however have open lanes once in a while where you get a chance to pass slower cars. Enjoy!
