At JFK take the Train to the Plane to Sutphin Blvd. There take the E train to the first stop in Manhattan 53rd (and Lex)

The Train to the Plane-$5
Subway-$2

"Train to the Plane" is the old name for what is now called the AirTrain. The Sutphin Blvd stop is probably called Jamaica Station on the signage.

We do this many times for personal short travels as we live very close to 51st and 3rd.

Cost was as previously provided. However, the signage in the subway car maps still has Sutphin Blvd.

Total travel time from 51st/3rd to, say, the 2nd to the last terminal stop is at most 1 hour 15 minutes.

Yes, "Sutphin" is used for the subway. "Jamaica" is used for AirTrain maps and announcements. Since the OP is traveling from JFK to Manhattan, they will probably see and hear "Jamaica" at the AirTrain stop.
