I do not like the sound of the mapquest directions and do not want to just head south on Rte 95.
Any experts? Am doing a mid-week trip next week leaving Rte 93 after rush hour. Will be done in Hamden around 5 PM (college interview for dtr). Thanks.

if I do google/maps/get directions, I get Rt 93 to Rt 495 to Rt 84 to Hartford then south to New Haven. I would have chosen from 495 to the Mass Pike and then south on Rt 91 to Hartford. I think 84 might take longer. Sounds like you'll be thru Hartford before rush hour which is good.

84 should not be a problem from the Mass Pike. We take it often and find it is the most direct route to north or west of Boston. We have family in NH so we take 84 to Mass Pike to 495 to Route 3 all the time.
Hartford to Waterbury is where it gets too busy, but you will be heading south in Hartford. Plus, you will be traveling the opposite way from what I described.
This route is much better, imho, than 95. Just be sure to avoid the rush hour and you should find it to be a pleasant drive.

Thanks - I get the first part of the trip - but the part from Hartford is sending me Wilbur Cross Prkway - I don't like that road - looking for Hartford to Hamden routing.
We may wait to leave Hamden until about 6 after rush hour - trying to time trip to make 1 PM tour, 3 PM interview, avoiding rush hour and making RT in single day.

There are really only 2 choices for Hartford to Hamden: (Are you going to Quinnipiac?)
Interstate 91 all the way to Route 40 (connects to Route 10) or other exits where you'd have to take local streets to Hamden area.
Interstate 91 to Wilber Cross (Route 15) south until the Hamden exits
91 has a lot more traffic and trucks. Wilber Cross doesn't have any trucks. I prefer the Wilber Cross when I go to Hamden to visit my sister.
